Veeam has been very diligent on their development of their free physical backup product and has brought some great features to this product, Veeam Endpoint Backup FREE 1.5.

Veeam Endpoint Backup FREE is a great solution for physical backups. It is free (like its name suggests), so there’s no reason you can’t go out and install it on your workstation and give it a whirl.

Here are some of the new additions to Veeam Endpoint Backup FREE 1.5:

Email Notifications

You can now receive email notifications, so you know your backup ran and if it was successful or not. Users have been requesting this feature since the release of the product, so it’s always great to see how Veeam listens to its user base and responds so quickly.

You can see in the screenshot above, it’s a very simple configuration in the GUI. Provide your SMTP server settings and user authentication to connect it up.

New Scheduling Options

There are now a few more advanced scheduling options. This is really important for people who maybe only want to run on workdays or on a specific day. Before this update, there was scheduling but it was limited. Now you can tell it more granularly when you want it to run your backups.

CryptoLocker Defense

You can tell your backup target to automatically eject when backups are complete, which will help prevent ransomware from getting into it and encrypting all your backups. This is important if you back up to a USB drive that you always leave connected to your workstation.

Side note: ransomware is getting more and more sophisticated and having a backup solution in place is no longer a safeguard – if your backup target is on the network, it can easily get encrypted and you’ll find yourself paying that ransom to get your data back. Check on your security policies and tools and be sure you have everything in place to prevent this type of attack from even happening.

Small Improvements

You’ll see gains in backup performance and also capacity savings. There is some more intelligence there for laptops. For example, if it sees that a laptop has low battery, it will pause the backup until the laptop is charging.
