Transport Enforcement System

Microsoft made an announcement on March 23 that it would enable a transport enforcement system in Exchange Online to address the issue of emails being transferred to Exchange Online from unsupported and unpatched Exchange servers.

As stated in the initial release, Microsoft will begin with a very restricted subset of servers: Exchange 2007 servers that connect to Exchange Online using an inbound connector type of OnPremises. Exchange 2007 is the first version of Exchange from which you can migrate to Exchange Online in a hybrid configuration, and Microsoft specifically chose to start with this version because these servers are run by clients that Microsoft can identify and with whom they already have a relationship.

Customers who have servers in this configuration sending email to Exchange Online will notice a new mail flow report in the Exchange admin center. This report informs a tenant admin of any unsupported or outdated Exchange servers in the customer’s environment sending email to Exchange Online.

Delayed Reporting To First Group Of Customers

Microsoft’s original objective was to make this information available to the first group of customers with affected servers by the end of June, but was still working on finalizing the report and completing some additional engineering tasks. As a result, Microsoft postponed the report’s publication to the initial group of customers by one month, and the first group of customers will now receive the report on June 23, 2023.

For Other Exchange Server Versions, Here Is An Updated Expected Timeline

With the reporting deadline now aimed for June 23, 2023 for the first group of customers, the original timeline has been updated by 30 days as well. The following summarizes Microsoft’s updated expected timetable for Exchange Server versions:
