What engagement level of Managed IT Services do I need?

Managed IT Services appears to be the hot topic amongst IT companies and what they offer their clients. It makes sense for IT companies to offer it because it is a chance to have steady, predictable monthly revenue. If you are considering using Managed IT Services, it makes sense for you because you now can accurately predict your IT costs per month, helping you plan your budgets for the year. However, there isn’t a one-size-fits-all solution and you will need to look at exactly how managed you would like to be with your IT company.

I can’t speak to what other IT companies offer, but here at Mirazon we have three levels. Starting from the least amount of being managed to everything that is IT being managed there are Managed Firewall, Managed Infrastructure and finally, fully Managed IT. I will go into more detail about each below.

Managed Firewall

(Assume one firewall is needed for this example. Your company might need multiple firewalls based upon your specific environment.)

If you are considering engaging into a Managed IT Services agreement but unsure if it is right for you, this is a great place to start. In a Managed Firewall solution, we put in a properly sized firewall for traffic flow in and out of your environment. It will be configured and installed into your environment at the cost of a one-time payment. It can be bought outright by you or you can pay extra monthly to use one of Mirazon’s. The choice does affect the monthly cost, but there are also added benefits if we are the owners of the firewall installed, but we will get to that later.

You will receive the following whichever way you choose:

  • Help desk support with unlimited adds/changes during support hours
  • 7x24x365 proactive automated security monitoring and alerting
  • Unified Threat Management mitigation
  • Configuration troubleshooting
  • Implementing approved firmware upgrades
  • Performing a backup after each completed firewall changes or updates
  • Scheduled automated backups
  • Remote storage of backup revisions

If Mirazon owns the firewall, you will also get the advantage of maintaining a consistent monthly payment, even if we upgrade your firewall due to your company’s growth. If you own the hardware, then we will help you plan for the upgrade and make recommendations on what you should purchase based on your needs, but any upgrades are at a capital expense to you.

Under this agreement type, you don’t have to worry about your firewall because we will monitor it and alert you when issues pop up. However, you are still responsible for the rest of your environment. If this seems like a bit of an undertaking, read on to learn how to offload more of that.

Managed Infrastructure

Under this level of engagement, we would apply the same benefits from the Managed Firewall level to the backbone of your environment. We will be responsible for monitoring your server(s), firewall(s), switching hardware and your backups. This option allows for us to be the owner of the firewall(s) but you will own the other hardware. If you don’t want to own the other hardware beyond your firewall, we do have an option for that (HaaS) that we’ll cover later.

This level also includes installing and monitoring of your anti-virus application on your servers. You will now have access to a Virtual CIO (VCIO), an experienced Mirazon IT engineer, who will help you plan for upgrades and guide you through any decisions involving your main IT infrastructure.

This level of Managed Services does not include any help desk support for your desktop computers or other devices that your end users might use to perform their daily responsibilities, like smartphones or tablets. You will still be responsible for answering those requests whenever someone forgets their password or loses an email.

Managed IT Sevices

Under a Managed IT services agreement, we become your IT team. We will take all those calls from your employees asking for help. We will also include all the benefits already listed earlier in this post, but now you will have an “all-you-can-eat” situation for services after any remediation project has been completed. This means you and your employees can call us during normal support hours, a thousand times a month and you pay the same, consistent monthly payment. This type of engagement is amazing for those companies who would like to have the reassurance of a full IT team but don’t have the budget for one in-house.
