Why You Should Switch from Office 365 E3 to Microsoft 365 Business Premium

By March 17, 2021No Comments

Welcome to the rules of Microsoft licensing, where the rules never stay the same and the names keep changing. Last year Microsoft launched/renamed their Business-level licensing and added a new level: Business Premium.

More on this here in last year’s announcement on our blog.

So now there are two monthly licenses you can choose from for $20 per user: Office 365 E3 or Microsoft 365 Business Premium.

If you aren’t using Microsoft’s dialing or phone system capabilities, have 300 or fewer users, and have E3 licensing, read on – you may want to change your licensing.

Business Premium has access to all the same applications as E3 does, and then some. By switching from E3 to Business Premium, you will get (on top of the apps you already have) access to – and not limited to — Threat Protection, Identity Management, Intune, AutoPilot, Win 10 Pro, etc.

Review the chart below for a fuller comparison:

“But where’s the tradeoff?”, you might be asking. Well, there are a couple. Business Premium is not considered an “Enterprise” product (hence the user maximums). The mailbox size drops to 50 GB and the OneDrive storage is reduced to 1 TB per user. You will also lose access to on-prem CAL rights — which could be a dealbreaker if you need those — and didn’t already have perpetual licenses in place before you moved to the cloud. However, if you are already sitting below all those thresholds, this switch will be huge for added cybersecurity tools and other features your IT administrators will love.

If you have Office 365 E3 and think Microsoft 365 Business Premium might be right for you instead, give us a call at 502-240-0404 or email us at info@mirazon.com and we’ll help you evaluate that and make the transition!
