We live in an age of ubiquitous wireless technology and it has become an expectation. We expect wireless at work, home, play, shopping, or even church. This shift in regards to wireless leaves us at an interesting point in all of the above listed areas. The next question is a common one:
“I just want wireless for my business wireless! Won’t the access point from [insert big box retailer name here] work for my company?”
The quick answer is: maybe. However, it’s important to note that all wireless access points, or APs, are not created equal. There are some important questions you need to answer to determine whether a big box retailer solution is enough:
- How many people make up your office environment?
- How much office space are you trying to cover?
- Do you let people connect their personal devices to the network?
- Do you want to isolate clients on wireless to not see the whole network?
Depending on the level of administration and how many devices are connecting, what you get from a retailer may not meet your needs. On the other hand, it just may be the exact fit. I tend to be of the opinion that anything that you buy at a retailer is great for home use. It is even great for home office use.
One thing that you will notice offhand between the APs you buy at a retailer versus a commercial-grade AP is the initial cost. Commercial grade APs are designed to be more powerful, handle a greater number of attached devices, and easily integrate with existing infrastructure. If you want something that is commercially ready and designed for the commercial setting, then you will want to take a look at Ruckus Wireless.
Ruckus Wireless has a decent sized product line, but it is very specific. All they do is wireless. They have APs designed for very dense environments with lots of devices connected, APs designed for outdoor use, and even APs with the newest IEEE fifth generation Wi-Fi standard called 802.11ac.
